Nurturing Hope, Restoring Health, By Connecting Resources To Create A Self-Sustaining Community…One Village At A Time.

What We Do
One Village At A Time is a 501(c) non-profit, non-government organization, which strives to create small, sustainable programs for AIDS orphans and their villages. These African villages are geographically isolated, and have little or no access to existing NGO or government-sponsored programs. The programs revolve around creating the resources to feed, clothe, educate and nurture these children. One Village also creates programs to support the village as a whole by empowering the local leadership, church leadership, local businesses to support these children and their community.

Why Do We Do This…The Need: Nambale, Kenya
The numbers of orphans resulting from the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Sub-Sahara Africa ranges from 11 to 16 million depending on the news source or agency. Estimates of the numbers in Kenya alone are well over 1 million. The disease has also weakened or eliminated the extended family and other communities upon which orphans have traditionally depended.

The international organization Human Rights Watch recently released a report, which charged the Kenyan government with failure to support these children due to the stigma of AIDS. They called it a Conspiracy of Silence. Until 4 years ago primary schools were not free and secondary schools are still not free.

The Ministry of Finance in Kenya reports that Nambale is 4th in hardcore poverty 6th in absolute poverty, 10th in food poverty out of 72 districts in Kenya. There is no running water, no electricity in homes or schools. The average yearly income of a family is $150US per year.

What Makes Us Different
Our programs are small and self-sustaining. Our programs are village-driven and village-accountable. The program goal is to assist local health, clergy, school officials and other Community Based Organizations (CBOs) to develop the program(s) that will be self-sustaining within 3 years.

Our programs do not reinvent the wheel. We build partnerships with existing NGO programs and the village leadership, work to empower the village organizations and structures to find existing resources and grants, and encourage coalition building at the village, city, county and national levels.

Our programs empower communities by nurturing hope, restoring health, and connecting resources to create a self-sustaining community. We do this one village at a time.
